ADUs allow people to age-in-place, but they don't help solve the lack of housing if a) it is not rented to folks who need affordable homes in the area where they'll work, or 2) if it used for an AirB&B, which is how many are used.
Sad, but true. Hopefully, ADUs will prove a boon for older adults who are looking to downsize. Hawaii and Colorado just became the tenth and eleventh states to pass new laws allowing more homes on smaller lots so single-family homeowners can now build accessory dwelling units on their property. Multiple homes now can be built on lots as small as 2, 000 square feet.
Wouldn't it be wonderful? The idea is to get together with friends, pool resources and buy a place where everyone (hopefully) can have their own room and be there for all the friends whenever they are needed. We can invite Dev Patel to run it, and have Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy visit!
Houston doesn't have zoning laws based on USE but it has lots of restrictions and a crazy complex development code that covers every issue you might expect in use zoning.

Lots of great information ! I am putting a star on this article for future reference
Remember the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? Could we make that happen in the Bay Area?

Thank you for the correction. I imagine it makes a difference
